Remove the background of a photo and keep the person or object.

Processed in Your BrowserThe subject is found by a small model that runs on your device, so the picture is not uploaded. It works best when one person or object stands out clearly. Fine details such as loose hair can be cut off.

About Background Remover

Cutting a person or a product out of a photo by hand takes patience and an image editor. This tool does the first pass for you: it finds the main subject of the picture, makes everything else transparent, and gives you a PNG file to download.

The work is done by a small image model called U2-Net, which was trained to tell the main subject of a picture apart from what is behind it. The model runs inside your browser. The first time you press the button, your browser downloads the model and the program that runs it, about 7 MB together, and then your device does the calculation. Your photo is not sent to DocBrio or to anyone else.

To decide what belongs to the subject, the model looks at a small copy of your picture, 320 pixels wide and high, and the result is then enlarged to the full size of the photo. That keeps the tool fast enough for a phone, but it also explains its limits. Large, clear shapes such as a person, a bottle, a shoe or a car come out well. Very fine details, for example single strands of hair, fur, lace or the spokes of a bicycle wheel, are too small for the model to see and are often cut off or left with a soft edge.

After the background is removed you can choose what goes behind the subject. Transparent keeps the cut out as it is, ready to be placed on any design. White gives the plain background that many application forms and online shops ask for. Colour lets you pick any other shade. The download is always a PNG, because JPG cannot store transparency.

The picture you start with matters more than any setting. Results are best when there is one subject, it is in focus, and its colours differ from the background: a person in a dark shirt against a light wall, or a product on a table. When the subject and the background have similar colours, or when several objects compete for attention, the model may keep the wrong part or remove a piece of the subject.

Always look at the preview before you use the picture. The chequered pattern in the preview shows the transparent areas, so missing or leftover parts are easy to spot.

When Should I Use This?

Use it for product photos for an online listing, a profile picture on a plain background, a logo or sticker cut from a photo, or a first rough cut that you will tidy in an image editor. It is a quick helper for everyday pictures, not a replacement for careful manual work.

How to Use Background Remover Step by Step

  1. Choose one photo. A picture with a single, clear subject works best.
  2. Press Remove Background. The first time, wait while the model is downloaded.
  3. Check the preview. The chequered areas are transparent.
  4. Under New background choose Transparent, White or Colour.
  5. Press Download PNG.

Limitations

There is no brush to correct the result by hand. Loose hair, fur, glass and other fine or see through details are often lost. Pictures larger than 2560 pixels on their longest side are made smaller. The tool handles one picture at a time, and the result is always a PNG. If your passport or identity photo must meet official rules, check the result carefully, because an uneven edge can get a photo rejected.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my photo sent to a server to remove the background?

No. The model is downloaded to your browser and runs on your device. The photo itself does not leave it.

Why is part of the hair or the edge missing?

The model studies a small 320 pixel copy of the picture, so details thinner than a few pixels at that size cannot be seen. A photo with the subject large in the frame and a plain, contrasting background gives a cleaner edge.

Why does the first use take longer?

The model and the program that runs it, about 7 MB together, have to be downloaded once. Your browser usually keeps them, so later pictures start faster.

Can I get a white background for a form photo?

Yes. Choose White under New background after the background has been removed. Check the size and the other rules of the form yourself, because this tool does not crop or resize to an official format.

Why is the result a PNG and not a JPG?

Only PNG can store transparent areas. If you chose a white or coloured background and need a JPG, convert the file with PNG to JPG.
